Phenolic pipe insulation is a rigid closed-cell foam insulation material with superior water resistance and thermal conductivity properties, ideal for pipe lagging systems.
Kingspan Kooltherm phenolic insulation comes in 1m pre-formed sections. It’s free from CFCs, HFCs, and HCFCs and boasts outstanding fire performance with European Classification of Reaction to Fire classification of BL, S1, and d0 ratings.
Thermal Conductivity
Phenolic insulation boasts low thermal conductivity, making it capable of preventing heat loss through pipes. This allows it to reach specific thermal performance targets with reduced thickness than alternative materials like mineral fibre insulation.
Closed cell phenolic foam insulation is highly watertight. Exposed to moisture, its moisture absorption gradually ages the material slowly over time limiting degradation over time.
As opposed to rigid insulations that can withstand moisture exposure, other forms can deteriorate significantly when exposed to moisture, potentially diminishing their performance and shortening their service life.
Kingspan Kooltherm phenolic insulation is manufactured and fabricated into pipe shells, curved segments, sheets, tank and vessel coverings and sheet applications for general industrial uses. It comes equipped with factory applied Class O aluminium foil vapour barrier and chemically applied bore coating allowing it to meet the requirements of BS5422:2009 and BS5970:2001 while also having excellent fire-retardant properties and meeting EN 15251:2004 as well as ASTM C1126 Type III specifications.
Moisture Resistance
Rigid phenolic pipe insulation features a closed-cell structure designed to resist moisture penetration and prevent mold and vermin growth in its system. Furthermore, its low water vapour permeance rating keeps any moisture that penetrates contained and will not spread throughout it – which reduces condensation risk in chilled water pipes that could otherwise lead to corrosion.
Phenolic insulation offers low thermal conductivity values compared to fiberglass, cellulose, and cellular glass insulation materials, helping reduce energy consumption by decreasing heat transference rates.
Kingspan Kooltherm phenolic foam insulation is classified as class O fire protection material, meaning that it provides outstanding fire safety characteristics. Difficult to ignite and producing little smoke during a fire, it also offers long-term energy savings through reduced heat transfer and pipe cooling, plus requires very low maintenance needs and can easily be monitored to detect issues before they worsen and ensure optimal performance of this insulating material.
Fire Resistant
Phenolic insulation provides outstanding fireproofing capabilities and is classified as class O insulation, making it easy to cut and shape to fit around pipes and equipment seamlessly. Phenolic is particularly well suited to chilled water pipe systems in air plenums as it offers both energy efficiency and fire safety benefits.
Phenol insulation retains its insulating properties over an extended period, helping reduce installation costs and enhance project efficiency. Maintenance needs become less frequent; however, regular inspection of lagging should still take place to monitor for signs of wear such as cracks or gaps and keep accurate records of maintenance work completed on it.
Phenolic foam pipe insulation from UNT is used for pipe sections and curves, tank coverings and vessel covers, sheet insulation applications and duct covers. Made of rigid closed-cell phenolic foam and protected on its exterior with aluminum foil vapor retarders.
Durability
Phenolic insulation boasts outstanding compression strength, remaining intact even under normal operating conditions. Furthermore, its resistance to fungus, mildew and vermin growth makes it an effective vapor barrier as well.
Rigid phenolic insulation offers superior thermal performance at lower thermal conductivities than more commonly used insulation materials such as cellulose or extruded polystyrene foam, leading to reduced capital and operating costs.
Kingspan Kooltherm phenolic pipe lagging is made from rigid closed-cell phenolic foam and covered with an aluminium foil vapour barrier to meet British Standard 5422/5970 compliance, available in 1m lengths.
DI utilizes state-of-the-art CNC equipment to efficiently fabricate curved segments, insulation covers, and tank heads at an unprecedented level of speed and quality. This reduces installation time significantly while eliminating in-field fabrication costs significantly; further saving both labor costs and providing more consistent and exact fitments to improve energy efficiency.
