Types of Thin Insulation

Thin insulation helps homeowners save both energy and installation time and materials with its efficiency in energy loss reduction, and installation time and materials savings. There are various kinds of thin insulation on the market today – both eco-friendly and manmade versions – so finding something suitable may take more than one or two visits to find.

Kingspan’s OPTIM-R insulation panels feature rigid vacuum-sealed construction with microporous core encased and sealed within an R value-rich envelope, offering exceptional R value performance. Ideal for new builds and refurbishments alike, and helping Ireland meet energy efficiency regulations.

Blanket Batts & Rolls

Blanket insulation is one of the most commonly used forms of home insulation. Composed primarily of flexible fibers – typically fiberglass – blanket insulation can also be crafted using mineral (rock and slag) wool or natural fibers such as cotton. Some versions feature facings to aid handling and fastening easier while also improving thermal resistance; roll or blanket forms are ideal for homes with standard framing, since their widths correspond perfectly with space between studs and joists.

Insulation can be installed in walls, floors and ceilings and helps reduce noise pollution and energy bills by regulating indoor temperatures. Before insulating your home it is vitally important that it is air sealed so the product works optimally – this would also include having your attic professionally insulated as an added measure to maximize your budget for insulation costs.

Aerogel

Aerogels are widely known for their remarkable insulating properties, especially at higher temperatures (see below). Composed almost entirely of gas – an inefficient conductor of heat – aerogels effectively negate all three methods of heat transfer (conduction, convection and radiation).

Light and water-repellant materials make these ideal for use in environments with limited space, as they protect operating components against corrosion and moisture damage, providing significant benefit in marine or other high humidity applications.

Manufacturers offer silica aerogel materials in various forms and sizes, including Thermablok’s thermally efficient blanket that covers framing studs to prevent thermal bridging at just $1.99 per square foot. In effect, Thermablok acts like an insulated sheet made of silica aerogel.

Other manufacturers use polymer-enforced methods of aerogel production, which results in significantly stronger material than its unreinforced counterpart. This makes the aerogel more resilient against compression. The micrographs in this table were obtained using SEM measurements performed under high vacuum conditions; these enable observation of topography at higher magnifications while more accurately estimating chemical composition of as-received samples.

Kingspan OPTIM-R

Kingspan OPTIM-R insulation products are perfect for new build, refurbishment, or retrofit projects requiring low U-values and thin roof builds. Their thermal performance can be up to five times greater than commonly used insulation materials; additionally their coated OPTIM-R E Inverted Roofing System adds robustness and ease of handling on site.

OPTIM-R panels are specially engineered to achieve extremely high R-values by being enclosed in a thin gas-tight envelope that dramatically decreases their thermal conductivity, helping achieve very high R-values and meeting stringent target U-Values – future-proofing your project against energy efficiency upgrades, such as air-conditioning.

Kingspan is dedicated to environmental sustainability, and their Optim-R panels are comprised of recycled content for maximum sustainability. Not only are they BRE certified and LABC (Local Authority Building Control) approved, they’re also backed by the GB Guarantee for even greater peace of mind. Unilin Thin-R

Selecting an insulation solution to protect your home or building can bring many advantages. Selecting one with appropriate thermal performance can lower energy bills, make living in it more comfortable and create a sustainable living environment for future generations. It may even become an asset when selling to potential buyers.

Unilin Thin-R is a closed-cell rigid high performance foil faced Polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation product with an outstanding thermal conductivity rating of just 0.22 W/mK, suitable for wall, roof, floor and timber/steel framed systems applications.

Unilin Thin-R is constructed using CFC and HCFC-free materials with an ultralow Global Warming Potential blowing agent for maximum environmental safety, adhering to BES 6001 environmental standards. Lightweight PIR insulation boards from Unilin are easy to handle; we advise keeping them upright away from direct sunlight in dry locations to minimize damage or moisture build-up.
